Candied Orange Slices
2024 MSBA Honey Show 1st place winner Candy, Kim Mehalick. Candied Orange slices soaked in simple honey syrup and dipped in chocolate. Kim adapted the recipe from Making Candied Oranges is Easier Than You Think at tasteofhome.com
Equipment
- 1 dutch oven pan
- 1 knife
- 1 cutting board
- 1 wire cooling rack
- 1 cookie sheet
- 1 air tight container for storage
- 1 small bowl for melting chocolate
- 1 mandolin
Ingredients
- 6 mandarin oranges (small)
- 2 cup local honey
- 2 cup water
- 6 oz chocolate, melted milk or dark chocolate
Instructions
- Make a simple syrup by combining water and honey in a dutch oven
- Bring mixture to low boil
- Wash oranges
- Use mandolin and slice your oranges between 3/16 and 1/4 inches thick
- Once simple syrup boils, add the orange slices one at a time and lower the pot to simmer
- Cook for 34-45 minutes. you want the peel to start to look translucent
- Remove orange slices to a wire cooling rack and let dry for 24 hours
- Don't waste the simple syrup. Bottle it for use later as base for cocktails or a juice drink
- Melt the chocolate in a small bowl
- Dip dried orange slices, one at a time, into melted chocolate to cover half the slice
- Store in air tight container for up to 3 weeks in the fridge
